Overview

The purpose of the application is to help the Teacher Inquiry Communities (TIC) Network leadership team select a diverse group of writing project sites and to plan an institute that is responsive to the needs of those attending. In addition to responding to the application questions (2–3 pages), please be sure to provide complete contact information for each participant planning to attend.

Rationale: The TIC Network offers this four-day summer institute, the purpose of which is to support writing project sites to develop and sustain inquiry communities. This event is for sites that are new to the process of supporting inquiry communities or that would like to revitalize their teacher inquiry communities by taking a fresh look at how to work with them.

We hope in this institute to demystify the idea of inquiry and inquiry communities by

• engaging participants in reading, writing, and thinking about inquiry
• developing inquiry questions
• gathering and analyzing data
• thinking about how to go public with the work.

This institute is an opportunity for sites to develop knowledge and leadership around inquiry, rather than for individual teacher-consultants to work on inquiry projects. Therefore teams will be asked to consider how this work with inquiry communities will be integrated into the ongoing work of their local writing project site. Preference will be given to sites that did not participate in Inside Inquiry 2007.

You will be notified by March 31, 2009, about your team's participation in this institute. At that time we will send information about pre-institute preparation.

Questions (2–3 pages)

1. What leadership roles do the participants fill at your site? How long have they had these roles? What are their responsibilities?
2. Please write briefly about why your site is interested in this institute. What do you hope to learn (include specific topics)?
3. If applicable, describe any experiences your site has already had with inquiry communities.
4. How will the work of the institute be supported at your site?
5. In what ways will participants be supported to bring this work back to the local site?
