Dr. Liz C. Stephens established the Central Texas Writing Project at Texas State University-San Marcos in 1998 and served as its Director until 2008. She has also served as the Director of the National Writing Project of Texas, a network of 12 sites in the state (1999–2008), and was a member of NWP's National Task Force (1999–2006). In 2006 she was appointed by The College Board to serve on the Advisory Panel for the National Commission on Writing for America's Families, Schools, and Colleges. Dr. Stephens has 23 years of teaching experience—10 in Texas public schools and 13 at the university level.
She is professor emerita at Texas State University and former Director of the Office of Educator Preparation. Her primary role on the faculty was preparing preservice teachers and teaching educational technology graduate courses. As Director of the Office of Educator Preparation, she supervised programming and procedures for approximately 1,000 teacher candidates each year.
Dr. Stephens has written books and numerous articles, chapters, and paper presentations on technology, education, and writing. Her book Using Technology to Improve Adolescent Writing: Digital Make-Overs for Writing Lessons is co-authored with Kerry Ballast, a teacher-consultant of the Central Texas Writing Project.
Dr. Stephens is bilingual. She was born in Laredo, Texas, to parents who were born and raised in Mexico.
