The NWP English Language Learners Network invites sites interested in expanding perspectives on English language learners to attend "With Different Eyes: A Conference for Teachers of English Language Learners Across Disciplines."

Pre-Conference Seminar

Friday, November 2, 8:30 a.m.–3:45 p.m.: Writing project directors and teacher-consultants are invited to a pre-conference seminar. Participants will explore how their writing project sites can support teachers to better address the needs of English language learners.

Conference Highlights

Saturday, November 3, 7:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.: Cosponsored with the UCLA Writing Project, the conference will take place at the UCLA Faculty Center. The conference includes more than 20 workshops led by teacher-consultants from writing project sites across the country. The UCLA Writing Project is offering two complimentary registrations per site on a first-come, first-served basis.

Keynote Speaker: Ishmael Beah
Ishmael Beah is the author of the memoir A Long Way Gone: Memories of a Boy Soldier. Beah was born in Sierra Leone in 1980. He moved to the United States in 1998 and finished his last two years of high school at the United Nations International School in New York. In 2004 he graduated from Oberlin College with a B.A. in political science.

He is a member of the Human Rights Watch Children's Rights Division Advisory Committee and has spoken before the United Nations, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Center for Emerging Threats and Opportunities (CETO) at the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory, and many other NGO panels on children affected by war. His work has appeared in VespertinePress and LIT magazine. He lives in New York City.
