2009 Recruiting and Supporting Content Area Teachers in Writing Project Sites

Increasingly, writing project sites are called upon to work with schools in professional development programs that involve teachers across the curriculum. In designing and delivering these programs, sites will need to count on the leadership of content area teachers. 

Nationally, 10 percent of summer institute participants are secondary teachers who come from content areas other than English. How can writing project sites attract more teacher-consultants from among content area teachers? And how can we involve content area teachers in creating vibrant communities that appeal to their interests?
