Breaking Our Silences

November 6, 2010

Los Angeles, California
Host site: UCLA Writing Project

Be sure to mark your calendars. This year With Different Eyes: A Conference for Teachers of English Learners Across the Disciplines celebrates its 20th anniversary. Sponsored by the UCLA Writing Project and co-sponsored by the National Writing Project, this conference supports teachers as they help their English learners to flourish in our schools.

The theme for this year is "Breaking Our Silences." The goal is not just to help English learners gain power and voice in English and in multiple languages, but also to encourage teachers to speak up and take action when freedom is threatened.

Otto Santa Ana , UCLA professor of Chicano Studies is the keynote speaker. He sets the stage by challenging us with a key question: How do we respond to America's threatened polyphony?

Reyna Grande , author of the award-winning novel Across a Hundred Mountains , will end the day by sharing her novels and draft of a new memoir, a coming-of-age story of separation and immigration.

In between these inspiring speeches, classroom colleagues will engage participants in hands-on workshops, demonstrating practices successful with their own English learners. These sets of concurrent workshops will focus on teaching and learning in all content areas.
