As more families who speak a language other than English move to communities around the country—where many classroom teachers may have little experience understanding and meeting their needs—writing project sites need to develop safe structures for teachers to explore and share ways of supporting ELL students. In this workshop, two writing project sites will share their models of beginning study groups, funded with ELL minigrants, and will describe how implementing these study groups developed capacity at their sites for the professional development of teachers with ELLs.
