How can we teach creatively and effectively while adhering to mandated curricula? Writing project sites in California have investigated ways to work in the spaces in and around prescriptive curricula—often involving a reading series—enabling them to support and empower teachers with effective writing instruction practices and creative utilization of the materials provided in the programs. This workshop will include examples of how these projects got started, what was involved in the planning, and how the professional development has enhanced the work of the teachers in their region.
