Three presenters demonstrate how they use student inquiry projects to stimulate reading (and writing) of nonfiction texts. They will focus on uses of reading that move the inquiry forward and help to build both classroom community and student motivation to tackle difficult texts. Pam Bodnar will share reading activities in an inquiry project involving American and Rwandan middle school students. Scott Derr and Billy Hague will demonstrate activities from their respective high school and junior high history and social studies classes. Participants will work with principles for implementing inquiry projects emphasizing reading and begin to plan their own inquiry-based units.
