A19 Composing in Thirdspace: Location-Based Writing Through Multiple Modes with Urban Students

This presentation explores an approach to teaching writing to urban students that brings teachers and students into a critical examination of language, identity, and power. Developed by teacher-consultants who teach in urban schools, this pedagogy emphasizes location and draws on home languages and teachers’ and students’ differing funds of knowledge. Teachers and students compose and represent their ideas in varied modes and digital media. The presentation will offer opportunities for writing and discussion, and is intended for both teachers and those who seek to build their own urban sites.
