National Writing Project

A2 Working Toward Relevance

In this session you will explore the importance of relevance in building professional development relationships and in offering teachers in low-income communities access to professional development. Determining what is relevant to schools and districts overwhelmed with state and federal sanctions means looking closely and listening carefully to the realities of students’ and teachers’ actual lives. Writing project sites can respond effectively to these realities by focusing on relevance as a concept in order to provide effective support that still lives up to the ideals and standards of the NWP.
