B9 Reading the Research: Media Education and Literacy in the 21st Century
This Reading the Research session examines a white paper titled “Confronting the Challenges of Participatory Culture: Media Education for the 21st Century.” Published by the New Media Literacies project at MIT, this paper explores the concept of participatory culture, the role of new media literacies in that culture, and the skills and situations required for participation. Focusing on the examples from classroom settings, as well as from outside of school time and after-school and community programs, participants will engage in a collaborative reading followed by group discussions of the ideas raised by the text. Facilitators and participants will explore implications for their local writing project work and applications for local programming.
