The second phase of NWP’s National Reading Initiative is focused on content area reading. Last spring the NWP coordinated an online event in which directors and teacher-consultants discussed ways to expand the participation of content area teachers in the NWP. Today’s workshop extends that conversation to the broader NWP community. The workshop will examine understandings of literacy across disciplines and grade levels; share the challenges in attracting and retaining content area teachers; and identify approaches sites might use to build greater content area leadership. Workshop activities will include the use of excerpts from professional articles and last spring’s online conversation.
