Revisited article: Moffett, Freshman Comp and the Teaching of Writing

By: Richard Murphy
Publication: The Quarterly, Vol. 17, No. 1
Date: Winter 1995

Summary: James Moffett's 1980 article "Confessions of an Ex–College Freshman" prompted this response—also written in 1980—from college teacher Richard Murphy. Moffett, Murphy believed, had devalued the importance of the traditional skills in writing. Here Murphy argues that a writing teacher's job is to help students develop both a "caring self" and a "skillful mind."
