Students Benefit From Teachers’ Writing Project Experience

Summary: Teachers from the Northern Plains Writing Project say that what they learn from their summer institute experience carries into the classroom and ultimately helps the students themselves.

Jordan said that all of the writing she is doing during the first session is helping to improve her writing skills. Thinking as writers and honing their craft carries over into the classroom as well, since the teachers said they're more likely to include writing exercises in the classroom. Wisthoff said it can be a challenge to justify writing exercises in her classroom, since kids aren't tested on writing for the state standards. However, all the teachers agreed that writing is important for students to learn how to do well.
