It's a Friday afternoon in July, far from the classroom. In an eclectic coffeehouse in Cortland, it's time for teachers enrolled in a writing institute at SUNY Cortland to be put on the spot.

They take turns during an open mike session and read from their own work: essays, excerpts from a novel, short stories, even an epic poem in rap.
