Characters Most Welcome in New Jersey Classroom

Summary: After attending workshops put on by the National Writing Project at Rutgers University and changing their approach to teaching, educators such as West Milford fifth-grade teacher Phyllis Blau say students are much more enthusiastic about writing.

Blau said using the NWP approach has made such a difference in her students' feelings on writing. "When I say take out your writing journal, they never complain. They are so much more enthusiastic."

And student Christopher Chacon made the same discovery as Kristen.

"I always loved to write, but now after I created my characters, I have a clear picture of who they are and what they are capable of," Christopher said.
