Young Writers Shine Through UCLA Writing Project

Summary: High school students in southern California celebrated the 26th anniversary of the UCLA Writing Project's Young Writers' Retreat, where students hold group discussions, workshops, writing sessions, and open mic nights in front of a friendly audience.

This was my third year at the retreat. It's a different experience each year, with different guest authors, different activities, and different students. It's very exciting," said Ms. O'Halloran Whitmarsh. "I've heard students say it changed their lives. They're a lot more confident about sharing their work with other people, and they're able to say they're writers."

The Young Writers' Retreat, which holds group discussions, workshops, writing sessions, and open mike nights, encourages young writers to step up and share their work with a friendly audience.

"It really is a great opportunity. I think it's a safe environment for new writers, since everyone supports and encourages each other," said junior Laura Rogers, a second-time attendee.
