Of course we are going to focus on readings that deal directly with the teaching of writing. But since we do know how important context it, and we know that little learning is going to happen if students don't feel safe or if they're not settled down sufficiently to think, also choose books that focus on what we call the backdrop of schooling, and by that we mean books and articles that attend to issues of race, class, gender, and sexual orientation.
