Illinois Teachers Find Creative Writing Inspiration

Young and 14 other teachers from different disciplines and grade levels have dedicated four weeks of their summer break to learning new ways of improving their students' writing skills. Eastern Illinois University is hosting this teacher-led institute for the third summer in a row.

"The best teachers of writing are writers themselves, and the best teachers of teachers are other teachers," said Robin Murray, director of the summer institute. This project is part of the National Writing Project.

Amber Laquet, an assistant at the summer institute, said the writing lessons are applicable to all disciplines. As examples, she said a science teacher could have students keep journal entries and a music teacher could have them write about their favorite composers.
