Mythology and Drumming Build Literacy for Ohio Students

Summary: The National Writing Project at Kent State University collaborated with Alchemy, a group that started as 28 sixth-grade boys, to develop a program to improve literacy, writing performance, and student achievement. Now 26 of those 28 boys are headed to college.

Alchemy also developed the Myths, Muses and Scribes program, which is a collaboration with the National Writing Project at Kent State University. It aims to improve literacy, writing performance and student achievement.

The Alchemy staff has trained teachers at KSU to work with urban males through mythology and storytelling. Eight of the boys have written poems that are to be published in a book this year.
