The NWP's Common Core Initiative will help develop and test lesson plans to meet the literacy goal of the new common core standards Kentucky adopted last year, Otto said.
In addition to Kentucky, Colorado and New York were also chosen to participate in the two-year initiative, which is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
"It is a big deal, because only three states were invited to be part of this team," Otto said.
She thinks Kentucky was picked because of the state's history of teaching writing and because Louisville participated in phase one of the initiative last year, she said. Kentucky was also the first state to adopt the common core standards.
