To commemorate the National Day, the New York Times Learning Network and the National Writing Project are asking people to identify their reasons for writing using the #whyiwrite hashtag. (A hashtag is a way of organizing information on Twitter, if you're unfamiliar.)

The goal is to get #whyiwrite as a trending topic on Twitter today in an effort to showcase why writing is important to people from all walks of life—students, scientists, firefighters, public personalities, etc.—and to emphasize that it's done by everyone, not just for those who list writer as a job title.
