NWP at Rutgers University Teachers Address Common Core Literacy Standards

Summary: Although students were not in session on Jan. 16 to observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Warren Hills teachers were in session for a full day of professional development activities. Teacher-consultants from the National Writing Project at Rutgers University worked with school staff to address the Common Core Literacy Standards in all subjects.

Professional development training is undertaken in school districts across the state. The overarching goal of professional development is to improve student learning and achievement. Professional development programs are based on a local, county and state approved Local Professional Development Plan that reflects established goals based on the district's needs assessment process. In Warren Hills Regional this recent session was the continuation of professional development activities that commenced in the fall 2011. During the January program members representing the National Writing Project from Rutgers University worked in collaboration with district staff to address Common Core Literacy Standards in the various subject areas including Business, Fine Arts, Industrial Arts, Language Arts/English, Mathematics, Science, Special Education, Social Studies and Health and Physical Education. The National Writing Project focuses the knowledge, expertise, and leadership of our nation's educators on sustained efforts to improve writing and learning for all learners.
