Excerpt

Callender's work with science and social studies teachers began after meeting Dr. Bill Housel, coordinator of social sciences at Northwestern State.

"When teacher consultants from NSUWP met to share and evaluate our Literacy Design Collaborative modules, Bill and I instantly found we had a lot in common," said Callender. "We began the process of working together to use his love of film and my love of science to develop a module that we could write, teach, and evaluate but more than that to create a lesson we could share with other science and social studies teachers that would tie in the rigorous requirements of reading and writing in real world science and social studies as emphasized by Common Core Science Standards and Next Generation Science Standards."

Callender and other teachers will meet with Louisiana's congressional delegation to explain the value of the National Writing Project.
