Bettencourt, 31, who lives in Hatfield, said she is "overwhelmed" and honored to be named teacher of the year.

"You don't think out of the thousands of teachers in the state that you are going to be the one that people say, `yes, you are the best that we have.'" Bettencourt said. "The night I got the phone call, I think my jaw hit the floor. It's not just a representation of me, it's a representation of all the people who do the work together with me in Springfield."

She said her students cheered and clapped in her classroom when the honor was announced."
