Director of the Western Pennsylvania Writing Project, University of Pittsburgh

Laura, director of the Western Pennsylvania Writing Project and practice faculty at University of Pittsburgh School of Education, develops partnerships for knowledge generation and equitable literacy practice. She is co-author of Doing and Making Authentic Literacies (NCTE, 2014) with Linda Denstaedt and Stephen Best. She has been involved with the National Writing Project since 1985, when, as a high school English teacher, she participated in an Oakland (MI) Writing Project summer institute. She directed that Michigan Writing Project site for two stints—from 1990-1994, and then from 1999-2012, before moving to Pittsburgh in 2014.

Dr. Roop received her Ph.D. in English and Education from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. She has served as a literacy consultant for 28 school districts, and has worked as an outreach and communications director for the University of Michigan School of Education. She also co-chaired the NWP State and Regional Networks Leadership Team for several years.
