Nicole Hackman sees the writing process as a versatile learning tool.

"Writing is not just a product. It's a way of thinking," the Handley High School English teacher said. "It's a method of discovery — discovering new ideas."

Hackman is making discoveries as one of 32 teachers participating in the 30th Annual Northern Virginia Writing Project Summer Institute.

The institute is a five-week program that began June 30 and continues through Thursday. It aims to help teachers work with students to improve writing across the curriculum.
