Ten New Sites Join NWP Network

Date: February 6, 2009

Summary: With the addition of ten new writing project sites this spring, the NWP now partners with more than two hundred colleges and universities to offer professional development programs.

This spring, with the addition of ten sites to its network, the National Writing Project moves closer toward its goal of putting a writing project site within reach of every teacher.

Eighty-five new sites have joined the National Writing Project network since 2000, including ten new sites joining this year. The NWP now partners with more than two hundred colleges and universities to offer professional development programs to K–16 educators, across the curriculum.

Each of the ten new sites will hold its first invitational institute this summer (2009). The summer institute is at the core of NWP’s model of “teachers teaching teachers” and is the source of each site’s cadre of teacher-leaders, who lead ongoing professional development that serves local teachers and schools.

In a recent article in The Herald of Arkansas State University , new-site director Dixie Keyes of the Arkansas Delta Writing Project in Jonesboro, said she spent nine months doing research, talking with area teachers, and writing the new-site grant proposal.

“I was driven by teachers’ questions and their desires to learn more about writing, about inquiry into their teaching practices, and about empowering professional development,” said Keyes, an assistant professor of education at Arkansas State.

Funding for new writing project sites is open to colleges and universities in the United States and its territories and freely associated states. Selection is competitive, and funding is tied by legislation to the NWP model. Learn more about the new-site application process at the NWP website.
