Six Northern Michigan teachers have joined a nationwide effort to improve the teaching of writing in the nation's schools, becoming internationally [sic] certified as teacher consultants.

Earning certification are Rich Bachus of Concord Academy-Boyne; Emily Cummings, Millersburg resident; Kalie Daniel, St. Francis Xavier School, Petoskey; Molly Jones, Harbor Springs High School; Carolyn Matzinger, Central Elementary School, Petoskey; and Gary Schils, Harbor Springs resident.

These Northern Michigan elementary and secondary teachers recently completed an intense four-week summer institute hosted at North Central Michigan College. The 2012 Invitational Summer Institute is sponsored by the home site's university partner, Michigan State University's Red Cedar Writing Project , a site of the National Writing Project. This year's institute was also supported by grant funds from the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Community Foundation and the Frey Foundation. . . .

"Once again our summer institute has been blessed with six distinguished, exceptional teachers who can now return to their home districts as literacy leaders," says Toby Kahn-Loftus, director of the Petoskey satellite.

"Our 2012 cohort of teachers demonstrated a range of grade levels and each participant created an extensive portfolio of work across multiple genres. Each teacher scholar has honed extraordinary writing skills which they will immediately take back into their classrooms. These are teachers who deeply understand research-based, best-practice writing instruction. They will be tremendous assets to their school districts."
