Uncommon Core

Date: July 10, 2014

Summary: Jeff Wilhelm, Michael Smith, and Deborah Appleman discuss Uncommon Core, their book about the misunderstandings surrounding "standards-aligned" instruction, and strategies for avoiding them in service of meeting the intent of the Common Core.

Excerpt from Show

Deborah Appleman, on the importance of cultural literacy and diverse learning strategies:

If you focus only on text-dependent questions, and dismiss the power of different kinds of reading strategies that exist across texts, then what you're saying is not that kids can read, but what they are reading. The focus becomes on particular content, and it becomes difficult to find a narrow focus that is appropriate for our increasingly diverse student population."
