Writing Our Future

Overview

Writing Our Future projects are designed by educators for educators and the young people they work with. Intended for use in schools, libraries, and other educational settings, Writing Our Future projects are COPPA compliant and educator-managed. NWP is committed to supporting young people's writing and civic participation by providing a safe and supportive environment for youth writing, media creation, sharing, and publishing.

Current Project

American Creed
Writing Our Future: American Creed invites youth (13+) and young adults to add their voice to the conversations sparked by the PBS documentary film American Creed (streaming free of charge at PBS.org). Educators—teachers, librarians, and youth mentors—are encouraged to engage young people as they work towards responding to the film through writing, media, or art using any of the invitations to write included on the youth publishing website. Educators can create accounts for youth at their school site or learning center to publish their work to a national, or even international, audience. More ›

Letters to the Next President: The Video Campaign
Letters to the Next President: The Video Campaign, was an online publishing project that invited students to create video compositions about issues they wanted the president to address.

Student work from around the country was published by their teachers in the spring of 2008.

Developed in conjunction with the Pearson Foundation's Digital Arts Alliance, Letters to the Next President: The Video Campaign built upon the success of the original Letters to the Next President effort in which nearly 6,000 students from around the country wrote letters to the presidential candidates during the fall 2008 election campaign.

Developed by the National Writing Project and Google , Letters to the Next President utilized Google Docs , the online composing tool, to support teachers in publishing persuasive writing by students that focused on issues in the public sphere.
